Prevent Child Abuse Pickens County (864)
Disposable diapers (newborn through larger sizes), diaper wipes, receiving blankets, baby wash, rattles, teethers, other small hand-held educational toys for babies. Donations of hygiene products for new moms, craft items such as crayons, construction paper, glue, colored chalk, etc. (these are used for self-esteem building programs for child abuse victims). Donations of paper goods and office supplies.

Volunteer your Time
A list of local organizations that can help make your spare time more worthwhile. Volunteers make the efficiency and effectiveness of United Way fund-raising possible. Generous local companies allow their employees to volunteer their time during the work day to participate in the United Way campaign. Campaign Team volunteers recruit businesses to participate in the United Way campaign, analyze and manage workplace campaigns, and communicate the United Way message to potential contributors.

Volunteer Opportunities in Pickens County


Alston Wilkes Society (260-9510): Collect and assemble emergency hygiene kits for homeless, recently released inmates, and inmate families (soap, wash cloth, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, razor, shampoo, and comb). We are located in Anderson but are willing to pick volunteers up from United Way office at their convenience.

American Red Cross (855-2557): Assemble “comfort” kits for fire/disaster victims. Teach health and safety courses (2 courses/yr). Make disaster preparation/prevention presentations. Serve on a Fire/Disaster Action Team and respond to single-family emergencies (2 hrs/mth). Serve as an Armed Forces emergency communications caseworker (facilitate phone contact between an Armed Forces member and their family, on call one week in five). Work at the Red Cross booth at local festivals. Administrative and Development opportunities needed as well.

Anderson-Oconee Speech and Hearing Clinic (226-2477): Computer data entry and receptionist.

Blue Ridge Council of Boy Scouts (233-8363): Work with youth in programs of character building, leadership and citizenship.

Clemson Community Care (639-2444): Sort and bag food in food pantry, client interviewers, yard work and building upkeep, house captains for home repair program. Clerical and front desk assistance and volunteers to help with public displays.

Easter Seals SC – Pickens (864-232-4185): Carpenters, builders, etc. to volunteer time and expertise to build wheelchair ramps on the outside of homes for people with disabilities in Pickens County.

Helping Hands Children’s Shelter (654-6154): Hold Saturday “Fun Days” with a cookout and outdoor games. Help beautify the grounds at the shelter. Take children to the movies, ball games, etc.

Meals on Wheels (878-7650): Volunteer drivers are needed from 11:00 to noon, one day per week to deliver no more than 12 hot meals to the elderly. Office volunteers on weekday mornings to assist with phone calls, computer work and special projects. Help maintain our Website & create an e-sletter. Home visitors to do client progress surveys. (These last two can be scheduled at volunteer’s convenience.)

Meyer Center for Special Children: Classroom Assistant to provide assistance with special-needs children in one of the Center’s preschool classrooms. Clerical Support in the Center’s front office.

National Federation of the Blind (878-6027): Clerical work in office, transport clients, assist with fund-raisers, form “fill out” service.

Pickens County Literacy Association (878-9642): Trained, certified tutors.

Pickens County Habitat for Humanity (843-9726): Construction, unskilled labor, gofers.

Pickens County Rape Crisis: Assist with Camp Kid, Rape Awareness Week, and R.A.D., a self-defense class for children.

Pickens County Seniors Unlimited (843-2275): Receptionist at Senior Center, deliver meals to home-bound clients, handyman for repairs at Senior Centers and client's homes, lawn & memorial garden maintenance.

Pickens County YMCA (859-3626): Sports and children’s programs, front desk receptionist.

Prevent Child Abuse Pickens County (898-5583): Baby-sit during parenting classes and support groups. Assist with fund-raising events. Basic office help, answer telephone, etc.

Safe Harbor II (467-1177): Answer 24 hour crisis and intake line childcare with shelter children, late afternoon and early evenings special activities with children: read, play, fieldtrips, cookouts, pizza parties, help with birthday parties; teach a skill or a craft to the women. Landscaping, donating and planting plants and trees, buy or build outdoor furniture be on call for general household repair research grants and write grants plan and hold fundraisers or serve on our fundraising committee.

Salvation Army (855-6408): Pick up household and furniture donations.

Samaritan Health Clinic of Pickens County (855-0853 x 10): Interview patients to make sure they qualify for services (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 9 am-12 noon). Hand out medication in pharmacy (Mon. 9 am-12 noon & 1 pm-5 pm, Wed. and Thurs. 9 am- noon). Landscaping, fund-raising, and grant writing volunteers.

SHARE (859-2989): Volunteer receptionist.

The Pickens County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs: Landscaping and gardening at residential homes and administrative building, painting, help in building a picnic shelter, and volunteers to help teach art to disabled citizens in our day program Monday-Wednesday.

United Christian Ministries (855-0853): Interview clients to determine needs, fill food orders, sort donated food and maintain lawn and grounds.
